Setting Sail on Lake Erie
For our Summer 2018 Symposium, we set sail on Lake Erie for a day of exploration of Put-In-Bay and its surrounding islands.
We departed out of Port Clinton in the early morning on a private sailboat and ventured to Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island, which is used as a freshwater field station since 1895 and part of The Ohio State University since 1925. We spent the morning touring the island and learning about the freshwater biology research, science education, and outreach that takes place through Stone Lab.
After our tour, we headed to Put-In-Bay where we enjoyed a delicious lunch near the dock and began our exploration of the island. We set off on bikes to capture the entire island, including the South Bass Island Lighthouse, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, as well as various local canteens.
We ended the day sailing on Lake Erie while watching a beautiful sunset from the water as we journeyed back to Port Clinton, which made a relaxing end to an exciting day.
We enjoyed our time exploring the islands of Lake Erie and look forward to setting sail again!
